CONSUMERS

Protecting Privacy

Customer information is never captured within the SIRAS Electronic Registration program.

SIRAS employs a combination of a product’s UPC with its serial number to establish a unique “fingerprint” for each individual product.  When a product is sold at a participating retailer the information is transmitted to SIRAS’s national database, where it is stored with the retailer’s transaction information.

To protect the privacy of the consumer, SIRAS logs retailer transaction data without recording any customer information. But when this product fingerprint record is established, the retailer and manufacturer have an identifiable date of purchase, from which the start of the warranty and return periods can be tracked.

With SIRAS’s Return Validation system, when a product is returned, the retailer has only to scan the UPC and serial number to find out if the product is eligible. If the product falls within the warranty and return policy guidelines, the return process is seamless. If it does not meet the guidelines, the system will lock and provide information so the store employee can easily show the customer why it is ineligible for store return. Again, the policy is tied to the product—not to the customer.
